She sat on the floor for hours, her knees pulled to her chest like she was eleven years old again. “We should have been here. We could have stopped them.” Liz kept repeating. Every thirty seconds or so, the rubber bands around her wrist snapped as she pulled at them. This was followed by a shallow squeak of pain.

That sound always made Jack's stomach twist on itself, and it was that much worse that he was hearing it at that moment. He thought that if he just said something, maybe she'd stop. But he couldn't say a word.
