The sound of the boys running in from outside was enough to make the small dragon like creature nearly fall from her position at the kitchen table. They shouldn't have been home this soon but the situation changed and Liz called on the Black Suits who had been guarding her and Jack's children for weeks to bring Trevor and Thomas home early.
Embre knew better than to panic after centuries of watching Jack Harkness' children. There would be no hiding from Trevor and Thomas, and a glamor would take too much energy. They'd find out eventually anyway, so instead of fleeing or hiding, Embre stayed on the chair she was sitting on and waited until the boys bounded into the kitchen.
“Whoa...” Trevor's eye grew huge before he elbowed Thomas in the gut. He was getting used to the oddness around the house, but this was just... “Is that...?”
“It's a toy!” Thomas ran over to the Fire guide, who was not doing much but blinking as to not frighten the children. A toy? It was almost insulting. It would have been if Embre wasn't already aware of Thomas' nature. The spark of flame on her tail waved in the wind as she looked Thomas in the eyes. “It looks so real! I bet you dad sent it as a present because he's been away for a really long time.”
Embre half snorted then, a soft airy laugh that betrayed her true personality. You don't know how right you are. She thought as the curious Thomas began poking at her face to test her out, to see how 'real' the skin felt. Embre recoiled a bit as Trevor looked on, watching the newest member of the family tolerate the gently prodding. “I don't think you're supposed to poke it,” the more cautious of the brothers said. “It's breathing...toys don't breathe.”
“The new ones do.” Thomas insisted with a backwards glance. “You wanna poke it? It's fun.” Thomas continued to prod the small dragon as her fiery little temper grew. Just like your father... Embre groaned to herself before Thomas jabbed her in the side, enough to make her cough and nearly fall from her chair. Embre rose up on her back legs, clamping her little razors of teeth on the tip of that poking finger.
The Fae guide put on her best authoritative tone as she gave the boy a hard glare, her tail fire blazing. “Thomas Franklin Harkness, I am a living being and you will respect me!” The dragon said firmly. Thomas' eyes flew wide open as he jabbed his sore finger in his mouth. In that moment, he knew the new toy was anything but.
Thomas looked back to his brother for help in getting out of trouble, only to see their mother standing there. She'd been avoiding them ever since the boys stayed with Kitty and John Myers, weeks ago. Liz's fear of harming her children was to great, but the recent meetings with the Seelie Queen changed all that.
Liz was smirking, trusting that Embre didn't really hurt Thomas. The fire Knight and fire guide exchanged a quick glance before both of them looked at Thomas disapprovingly. Liz sighed, looking apologetically at Embre before she crouched down and opened up her arms.
The boy flashes his mother a pathetic look before rushing over, buried his head in the far overdue hug. He was trying to hide that he was crying, but it just didn't work. It was more the missing her than anything and it was all he could do to let Trevor, who was also crying and trying to hide it, have space in their mother's embrace. The flood of emotions hit Liz like a jackhammer, but instead of recoiling in fear, she called on everything she'd learned that day and let herself cry.
Liz comforted her children for what felt like ages, not speaking, hardly moving, just being there, right where she belonged, when she needed to be. Liz picked her head up a bit, her gaze leaving her boys and meeting her new guide.
'I don't know what...or who you are, but thank you. Thank you for everything. All of you.' Liz didn't have to say a word, and she didn't have to try to reach Embre's mind. Embre's nearly broke down in tears herself as her gentle voice drifted into Liz's thoughts.
Embre's words didn't make much sense to Liz, because she didn't know who had brought Embre to Sirona. Sirona herself didn't even know that Embre had been sent from so far away, most people wouldn't even believe it was true if she told them.
Embre had been instructed in a firm tone not to disclose her origins, not to spoil anyone, and above all not to tell Liz who it was who had sent her back though time and space to protect and guide Liz and her family.
But Embre couldn't do that, not fully anyway. Part of her job, the most important part of her job, was to offer the Harkness family comfort when no one else could. The dragon hopped from her chair, landing with a soft thud as she watched mother and children reconnect. With words and a tone that would someday soon become all too familiar to Liz, Embre replied. “I am what I am.”
