“Just when you think that you're in control, just when you think that you've got a hold, just when you get on a roll, here it goes, here it goes, here it goes again.”

AN: Ficing this because I play both Liz and Red and it’s easier this way ;)

She rolled her eyes as the wall of muscles seated before her winced like a child with a skinned knee. “I didn’t touch you yet.” Liz snapped as she held the alcohol soaked gauze to Red’s wounded face. “You sure?” The demon cracked one eye open nervously as she quickly pressed the fabric to his wound to clean it.

“How is it you can nearly get your arm ripped off by a hellhound and you don’t flinch, but some prick hits you with a rock and you’re a sniveling baby about it?” She said as she pulled out a small butterfly closure, pressing it on Hellboy’s cheek as he whined a little more. “Hey, don’t tell nobody I’m being a pussy, kid.” He growled as he watched her toss the spent supplies in the trash. Liz turned back, her arms wrapped around her waist as she sat in the chair across from him. “You being a pussy is the least of our worries, HB.” She sighed, thinking about the events of the last few days. Hellboy frowned at her, knowing the problems they would face soon enough were in at least a small part his fault. He’d never admit it though. “It’s not my fault that…” He started before she cut him off. “I know.” Liz said as she stared at her boots, still caked with ooze and pollen from the fallen Forest God the team had faced earlier that night.

Hellboy watched her wrap her arms around her middle as she spoke, his tail twitching nervously. “You hungry, Liz?” She shook her head. “No. Feel like I wanna throw up actually.” She said as she pressed her chin to her chest. Red pushed a trash basket closer to her with his tail, a reassuring smile on his face. “Don’t want to get the gas bag and the old tyrant any more pissed off. Aim for the bucket.” He said hoping to coax a smile from Liz with a joke about Krauss and Manning.

His joke had the opposite effect however. In a flash Liz was back on her feet, her back to him as she tried to make for the door before he could see her tears. He was too fast for her, moving with amazing speed considering his size.

“What the fuck is going on, Liz?” Hellboy stepped in the doorway. She said nothing as she slinked back, looking for an alternate exit that wasn’t there. “Nothing. I’m fine.” She said in that old familiar way that meant she was not fine at all.

“Always were a shitty liar, kid. What’s eatin’ ya?” Red motioned for her to sit on one of the beds in the medical unit. She obliged him, knowing he’d follow her down the hallway making a scene if she didn’t.

Liz’s arms stayed around her belly as she drew her tears back, her fingertips occasionally flickering with fire as the two sat silently. “What is it?” Red urged her again, wondering how hard to push. He knew how to deal with her anger, that fiery temper that seemed to come out without warning unless you know what to look for. It wasn’t anger in her eyes that he saw though. It was fear. “Liz?”

She choked back a sob before she slammed her hand on the scanner next to the bed. It took less than 10 seconds to blink on, chirping and beeping a moment before the image on the screen changed from blank to an outline of her body. Her name and agent number flashed above the image as Red looked the screen over, his eyes growing wide as he noticed the two small glowing orbs that floated over the midsection of the outline on the screen. “Holy shit.” He said as he stood up, moving closer to the screen to inspect it.

“Yeah.” Liz let out a shaking breath before she pulled her hand away, causing the image to blink away just as fast as it had materialized. “I’m…Jack and me…we’re…” She looked down at the bucket a moment, but having eaten nothing that day, she simply coughed and shook her head as her tears started to pour again.

“What are you cryin’ for?” Red tilted his head in real confusion. “You’re havin’…kids, Kid!” He grinned warmly at his friend. She stood with an angry growl before shoving him away. “Are you an idiot?” She snapped.

Red’s expression shifted in an instant, his smile twisting into a dangerous sneer that made Liz scared until he opened his mouth. “Is Jack not happy about this?” He asked as he balled his stone hand into a fist. “Jack doesn’t know.” Liz admitted in a guilty voice. “You, Abe and Logan know, that’s it.”

Red’s hand unclenched as he shook his head. “Now who’s an idiot?” He said in a teasing tone. “What?” Liz’s eyes snapped up, blazing with fire at Hellboy’s accusation.

“I’m kidding!” The big guy said as he sat down on the bed, twisting his left arm around her Whether she liked it or not. He smiled at her, the wound on his cheek splitting open as he did. She reached a hand up and pressed the bandage on his crimson skin again as he hissed an undignified “Ow!”

“I don’t know how to tell him.” She said as she let herself be hugged. “Hey baby, we’re having some babies?” Red suggested with a chuckle. “Nice.” Liz grumbled, though she was smiling.

Red continued to grin as he felt her relax a bit, knowing not to push her until she was ready to talk more. Any attempt otherwise would make her shut down or worse, push her away entirely. “What do I do?” She said finally, slapping Hellboy’s hand as it moved from her shoulder to her belly. “Don’t touch my belly.” She scowled.

Red rolled his yellow eyes and pulled away. “You quit tellin’ everyone but the kid’s father that you got bread in the oven.” He said simple.

“Maybe I should get him drunk first,” She mused out loud as Red chuckled again and offered another plan of attack. “ Or, you drag him to your room and put that sexy whammy on him and when he’s too worked up to care you drop the bomb on him.”

Liz laughed so hard she nearly cried again. “I think that’s what got us into this situation in the first place.” She sighed and punched a few buttons on the scanner. A suggested conception date that was much more accurate than standard medical equipment could offer flashed on the screen. “Hey, wasn’t that when that weird Doctor guy took you and Jack someplace?” Red said as he studied the date.

“Venice.” Liz smiled at the memory of the trip, even though the Doctor had worked her last nerve on that wedding present turned mission just like he did every time she saw him. “Make up sex in the TARDIS.” She snickered as Red blinked. “Didn’t it get cramped in there? Damn box is smaller than I am.” Red had no doubt that Jack and Liz would find a way to have sex anywhere that was stationary long enough, and even a few places that weren’t.

“It’s bigger on the inside.” She shrugged before climbing off the cot. She turned to face Red before wrapping her arms around him. “Keep a secret for once in your life, please?” She begged her friend. “I’ll tell him, soon as this mission is over. OK? He’s got way too much stress right now as it is. This news might ...break him.” She said with a pointed glance. Red was silent a moment before he nodded in agreement, remembering what had happened the last time Jack had 'broken'.

Red pushed on her chest, not wanting to make her cry again with too much touchy feely crap. Plus, he was a little worried he’d hurt her, or break her. He couldn’t blame her for being nervous. Jack already treated her like she was made of glass, and this would only make matters worse.

“For you, anything.” He assured Liz as she smiled. “Might get him drunk anyway, though.” Red grinned deviously as Liz shook her head. “Where is our fearless leader?” Red asked, knowing Liz was just as protective of Jack as he was of her. She knew where Jack was every moment, even if it was halfway across the universe.

“Probably has Manning and Krauss halfway up his ass about what happened tonight.” She said sadly as Red tried to make another joke. “Kinky. He never struck me as the type to go for ectoplasm.” Liz snorted, shoving Red in the arm as she did. “Jack would never think three’s a crowd, but…ick.” She shuddered. “Not Manning. Not even on his worst day. Boyfriend with no mouth is one thing, but a guy like Manning…” Liz laughed. “Jack’d never fuck a guy like Manning, even if he was plastered off his ass on that hyper vodka stuff.”

“Ugh, TMI, kid.” Red groaned and looked at the bucket on the floor as if he’d need it soon, only making Liz tease him more. “Says the guy who walks in on us at least once a week.”

“Hey, how the hell am I supposed to tell if all that noise you make is a good thing or a bad thing?” Red said very seriously. “You need to soundproof that room.”

“Or get better locks.” Liz smirked as she leaned forward to plant a little kiss between the stubs of Red’s horns. “Thanks, HB. I…owe you, big time.” She pushed her finger the bandage one last time to make him whine in pain. “ Promise to go easy on you the next time I patch you up.”

“Gee, thanks Liz.” He sighed as he watched her walk out the door, wondering how long it would take for everyone at the Bureau save for Jack to know she was knocked up. If they were taking bets in an office pool, he’d have gone with under 48 hours.
