AN: Liz is 19, back at BPRD after her FBI training is complete as a full agent and making quite an impression.

She hated that everyone was excited to see her when she was back from her latest mission. Being the center of attention was not what she wanted when she did her job the only way she felt she could. She did it well. She did it perfectly, and she was the star of the BPRD for it.

She thought it was all a bit silly, honestly. So what if she saved more lives recently than anyone else? So what if she stopped that ogre in New York? So what? She was just…doing her job.

She finally escaped to find a bit of peace downstairs in the training room. It was new and the armory was right next to it for easy access. She selected a few handguns she’d always liked and laid them out on the table, prepping them as quickly and accurately as she had when she aced her exam in Quantico months ago. She was so engrossed with the beauty of the weapons before her she didn’t even hear the door open and shut.

“If you keep this up, you’re gonna be running this place one day.” Jack’s voice in her ear made the hair on the back of her neck stand up and her heart rate quicken. She didn’t know why. Well, she had some idea why but she refused to really admit it to herself.

The truth was she was noticing…things about him. Like the way his hair looked perfect to her all the time, even when it was so very imperfect. The way his hands were so strong get gentle, even when he was doing something as simple as taking a pen when she offered one. He never could keep his office in order.

But more than anything, more than his hair or his hands or his eyes or that gentle tone in his voice when she was upset, was the way he smelled. She knew that smell all her life. He always smelled the same everyday but now it was…different. Not like she remembered. Something about it made her heart skip a beat and her skin prickle with goose bumps if she thought about it too much. Like right now for example.

She was noticing things that women tend to notice about men and she wasn’t sure if that was a good thing. In fact more often than not she was quite sure it was NOT a good thing.

Liz cleared her throat and her mind before loading the last pistol. She turned to him with an embarrassed smile on her face, trying to push all thoughts that were anything more than their mentor-student relationship out of her mind, or at least buried enough she thought he wouldn’t notice. “I doubt that.” She leaned against the table of guns as she dropped her head. She wasn’t good enough to be in charge. She was just really lucky.

“I don’t. And trust me, I know about these things.” He slid off his signature coat and tossed it over the chair before coming over to inspect the array of guns she’d selected. “You like these things almost as much as Hellboy does.” He shook his head as she picked up a gun and fired off the entire magazine into a target, the final bullet ripping it clean in two.

“I’m a much better shot than he is.” She said with a little smirk as she reached to pick up another gun, ready to take down another target like it was made of nothing more than air.

“You could use a little more practice, maybe.” Jack pulled his favorite gun from his belt and preceded to destroy the target Liz was aiming at with 2 less bullets than she had to use.

“You think so?” She frowned and stepped closer to him, her voice filled with just a little disappointment. If anyone would know, it would be him. After all, he was the one who taught her how to fire a gun in the first place. She kept her eyes on him, all he did was smile that little smile that made her have to drop her eyes a moment when those thoughts she didn’t want to own up to became front and center again.

She turned from him quickly, dropping the empty pistol on the table with a clatter. Grabbing a fresh gun with a huff, she sunk a shot into each bull’s-eye of the targets she was aiming for. She had to get her mind off of those thoughts and back on the task at hand. A slow smile spread across her face as she noticed Jack’s eyes widen in shock, just for a moment. “You are…very accurate.” He said after a while. He had to admit that much. She had learned a lot in her few months as a full-fledged agent. He was proud of her, though he didn’t know quite how to say it.

She hit the button to reset the spent targets with fresh ones. “Eh. I had a good teacher.” She said casually as she picked up another handgun and examined it.

She liked the first one better.
