The Big Red Man
( Liz is 11)

She was running full speed, screaming at the top of her voice after she met Hellboy the first time. Jack Harkness had tried his best to warn young Liz Sherman about the demon the BPRD kept there, but she didn’t believe him. She never believed the stories he told her.

She ran right into the captain’s legs, and even though she was engulfed in blue fire, Jack scooped her up in his arms and carried her off to her room. Hellboy’s new liaison, Clay stared in disbelief as Jack walked out of demons room, the little girl still crying into his shoulder. The immortal captain’s shirt burned away and left nothing but flesh to scorch and smolder until he got Liz to her room and calmed down.

She was more upset about burning her friend, the man who had found her and saved her now. She stared at the burns and blisters on his skin, feeling terrible about it. “You need a doctor. Doctor’s fix everything.” Lizzie said when her tears finally stopped. It was years later when Jack finally explained to her why he started laughing so hard he almost cried when she said that.

Happy Christmas
(The Christmas after Liz killed her family)

Lizzie hated Christmas now. It used to be fun, but now she didn’t have much of a family to make her feel special. They were all dead, and the ones who weren’t didn’t even come looking for her. They didn’t even have a tree here. How could Christmas be anything with out a family and a tree?

She was in her room, trying to shut out the thoughts of another nightmare. She had them every night, and was starting to worry they would never ever stop.

Liz knew he was there when the little mattress on concrete slab shifted. She picked her head up, her face still wet with tears. “I got you something.” Jack slide a small wrapped present across the bed and smiled at her. “Happy Christmas.”

She slowly picked up and unwrapped the present. She pulled out a small Polaroid camera; just like the one her father had given her when she was seven. She stared at it a moment before a real smile spread over her face and she wrapped her small arms around his neck in thanks. She was laughing. For the first time in months, she was so happy she was laughing. This is how Christmas was supposed to be.

“Did you remember the film?” She grinned as he handed over a huge bag full of film. There had to be at least 50 boxes in there. It would be enough to last her at least a week.

You have insurance, right?
(Liz is 16.)

“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!” She was flickering flames from her hands as she ran around to the front of Jack’s very expensive sports car, her mouth hanging open in shock as the radiator poured liquid and the engine choked to a premature death. “I…didn’t see it?” She ventured softly. It was a tree. A big tree. How could she not see it?

“It’s alright.” Jack undid his seatbelt and hopped out of the passengers side and put a hand on her shoulder, smiling softly even though he really liked that car.

“I’ll pay to have it fixed.” Liz nodded as they walked away from the crash, Jack half paying attention as he called a car from BPRD to pick them up.

She screamed when the explosion behind them made a wave of heat hit their faces as they turned. Bits of painted steel crashed to the ground as Liz pressed her hands to her face and fell to her knees “OH CRAP!” She started to cry. No fixing it now.

Jack chuckled as he watched what was left of his car become engulfed in flames. He put his hand gently on Liz’s shoulder again and pulled her to feet after a few moments. “I’ll buy you a new one.” She chocked out at last. Jack laughed at the idea of a sixteen year old girl replacing a car that cost that much.

“You know something, sweetheart?” He was still chuckling as he reached over and brushed the tears off her face. She looked at him with a scowl. The same scowl she always got when he was going to say something that was perfectly accurate, but she didn’t want to hear. “You cry too much.” He said before he turned and opened the waiting car door for her.
