captain_flyboy. MERRY CHRISTMAS, SWEETIE. (Unbetaed, Jack and Thomas’ actions NOT approved by the mun because it’s a surprise, and written while i was drinking coffee and waking up so errors abound, I’m sure. Set BEFORE the twins know that Santa is not only very very real but an old college friend of Jack’s :D )
Trevor sat with his knees to his chest the same way his mother used to when she was upset. As the clock inched closer to far past the twins bedtime, Liz’s insistence that they needed to go to sleep went unheard. Even the threat that Santa wouldn’t come if they didn’t go to sleep didn’t phase him.
“I can’t sleep without it.” Trevor clutched a tattered book in his hands. Liz knelt down beside her son, glaceing at his twin brother a moment who just shrugged. “I don’t need it. I’m a big boy.” Thomas insisted. It wasn’t true, but Thomas wanted Santa to come so he’d pretend to sleep if he had to.
“I could do it.” Liz offered only to be met with a dejected scowl. “It’s not the SAME!” Trevor insisted as he got to his feet and ran up the stairs to the bedroom he and Thomas shared. The other boy glanced at his mother, who looked heartbroken and somehow smug at the same time.
“Go.” She pointed to the stairs as she stood up. “I’ll be there in two minutes and it’ll all be alright, I promise.” Liz instructed before Thomas plodded up the stairs.
Jack Harkness didn’t jump when his phone rang even though it was nearly 2AM in Ireland. “Merry Christmas, Sweetheart.” He said cheerfully before asking, “It didn’t work, did it?”
“Nope.” Liz spoke softly into the phone so the boys couldn’t hear her if they didn’t really go to their room. “I think it’s because it’s Christmas...they miss you.” She said before adding. “I miss you.”
Jack sighed, the guilt apparent in his voice. Before he could even speak, Liz interjected. “We’re fine. Christmas is just a day. We’ll do it after you deal with the Troll War...mess. I just need a little...help getting them to bed, just like I was afraid I would.”
Thousands of miles away, Jack yawned and rubbed his hand over his face, mentally cursing the fact that some creatures didn’t care about holidays or families or anything. They just wanted to rip each other to pieces and any innocent mortal bystanders that got in the way and Jack needed to stop it, it didn’t matter what day it was.
“Did you find the book?” Liz asked, interrupting Jack’s thoughts. “Don’t need it.” Jack chuckled softly from his end of the call as Liz walked up the stairs. She found their copy of the bedtime story Jack had been telling the twins nearly every night since the day they came home outside the twins bedroom door.
“Oh...yeah. You can probably recite it in your sleep.” Liz teased as her and Jack both laughed. “Yeah.” He admitted, a touch of sadness in his voice. Liz smiled, as though Jack could actually see her. “You ready?” She asked, curious if he needed more time to get him mind in the right place for this. “Always.” He replied, smiling that same way. He’d been looking forward to this all day, even if it meant he’d lost a bet to his wife..
Liz pushed the door open to find Thomas pretending to sleep and Trevor coiled up in all his blankets like a next. She nudged her son who was faking in the leg and nodded for him to come over by his brother as she climbed in the bed with him. Trevor whined loudly enough for Jack to hear it, but he kept silent, not wanting to ruin the surprise for his sons.
“I told you, it’s not the same when you do it, Ma.” Trevor protested loudly enough for Jack to hear over the line as Liz pulled the covers away and handed their son the book. “I know.” Liz said, verbally signalling to Jack that she was about put her phone on speaker. She clicked the button and set her phone between herself and the boys. The twins stared at their mother, then at the phone confused about why she did that.
Jack waited about ten second for the rustling to stop as Liz got the boys settled before he spoke. “She doesn’t do the voices like...” He didn’t get to finish the statement about his superior storytelling skills before the line erupted with happy squealing. He let his sons revel in the excitement for a moment before very firmly stating. “One story, then bed.”
Trevor and Thomas stopped bouncing and nodded before chiming out. “Yes, sir.” then both hurried under the covers, snuggling either side of their mother silently as she held out the book for them both to see.
